Midnight Thirsts 2 Playlist

My Name is Tara Fox Hall, and I’m with you today to share an unofficial playlist created by my fellow author Tori Ridgewood for the vampire anthology, Midnight Thirsts 2! With three songs for each story, you can truly experience the range of emotion that each author presents in their specific tale. I was blown away by these songs.

I’ve got to say that Who I Am sums up completely what Danial and Theo are thinking at the beginning of partners…both alone…both wanting a real life, not the empty existence they have. And One Thing is spot on for Krys’s desperation she feels, wanting to have just one thing in her life go right after facing so much recent personal tragedy.

Take a listen, then read the stories…

Midnight Thirsts II Unofficial Playlist (3 songs for each story)

----------------------------------------
“Night Music” by Tara Fox Hall

One Thing, Fingers Eleven  (reminds me of Krys’s feelings, returning to the place where her family had been so happy)

Possession, Sarah McLachlan (makes me think of the music that Krys hears David playing)

Wake Up, Arcade Fire (when Krys wakes up after her night with David)

----------------------------------------
“A Living Specimen” by Tori L. Ridgewood

Shame on Me, Amanda Blank (Trisha’s late to the meeting, fooling around with her boyfriend on the new couch, feels responsible for what happened to him)

So Cool, Saidah Baba Talibah (when Trisha’s crawling through the ceiling and gets into the library, investigating on her own; also reflects the position she’s left in at the end)

Black & Blue, The Maids of Honor (Trisha’s battles:  first, against the vampire, and then anticipating her escape from the house)

----------------------------------------
“Flowers of Evil” by David W. Landrum

Luxury, Domenica  (seems to suit Jancinda’s lifestyle, the retro look of the video calls to mind vampires of a certain era, the look of a bawdy house, and the lyrics make me think of her rush to help her wounded friend)

Woman, Maroon 5 (the story is a lot about women -- love of women, of and for a  particular, woman... It also suits the love scene between Jancinda and Baudelaire.)

Secrets, OneRepublic  (about the relationship between Jancincda and Baudelaire, his apology to her, and the final scene in the story)

----------------------------------------
“Primal Magic” by Brooksley Borne

Fear, OneRepublic (expresses Aziza’s unhappiness at the beginning as she wanders the forest, misses home, and despairs about slaving for her hosts while she waits for her husband)

Apples, Delhi 2 Dublin (Aziza and Jaimie at the party... I know, technically Delhi is a reference to India, but I love the cross-cultural feel of the music -- two worlds meeting)

(Everything I Do) I Do It for You, Bryan Adams (expresses the growth of love between Aziza and Jaimie)

----------------------------------------
“Fangs A Lot” by Karley Campbell

Surprising Me, Will Currie and the Country French  (I like the spritely tone of the song matching the fun dialogue beween Caitlin and Ryan, and the situation they find themselves in)

I Don’t Wanna Be In Love, Good Charlotte  (when Caitlin and Ryan talk about how he trolls for girls in clubs, and she has had trouble in her recent relationship -- the club music suits them)

Be My Yoko Ono, Barenaked Ladies  (Caitlin and Ryan’s agreement, and reflecting how her father might see their relationship)

----------------------------------------
“Partners”, by Tara Fox Hall

Who I Am, Smile Empty Soul (reflects Danial and Theo’s individual perspectives, their solitary lives, at the beginning of the story)

Got Nuffin, Spoon (makes me think of the way they work together, finding their rhythm as partners, their reasons for helping each other)

Almost Easy, Avenged Sevenfold (Danial and Theo have each other’s backs, especially when fighting demons)

----------------------------------------
“Lilith” by Jodie Pierce

Every Breath You Take, The Police (Lilith is a predator -- she stalks her victims and enjoys it.  This song is hers.)

Got You (Where I Want You), The Flys  (Lilith captured, in Dorian’s hands...)

My Favorite Mistake, Sheryl Crow (Lilith’s triumphs)

----------------------------------------
“Beneath the Earth Lies Fire” by Ruth Imeson

Frozen, Madonna (Celia’s struggle after the loss of her lover, when she finds herself attracted to another man but tries to resist)

Burn It to the Ground, Nickleback (the vampires attack, and Ezra and Hawkins defend Celia)

Someone To Die For, Jimmy Gnecco (Ezra and Celia)

----------------------------------------
“Embraced by a Vampire” by Janessa Anderson

Kiss Me, Sixpence None The Richer (Emily meets Dante -- the song suits her sweet personality, their instant attraction, and has a bit of a period feel which matches the setting of the story)

Firework, Katy Perry (how Dante makes Emily feel, when he introduces her to physical love)

Tonight and the Rest of My Life, Nina Gordon (the bond forming between Dante and Emily, at the end of the story)

I'm wondering if you listen to music during your writing time to help inspire the writing of a scene? Or, does the music come after the story is written and you hear it thinking that's the scene in my story?

I do...if I am either stuck, or more likely looking for a song to put into the work itself. In the club scene of Promise Me where Danial and Sarelle first dance, I needed a song to be playing when they walked in. So I turned on the TV, and put it to the 80's music channel. "Jump" was on, so it went into the story. I wrote the rest of the scene, then when it got to the place where they danced for the first time, "Meet me Halfway (across the sky)" came on. Into the story it went. Then I needed a final song for the couple to ramp things up, and demostrate Danial's dancing skill. I was just lucky that the next song that played was "Addicted to Love" :)
For Night Music, I again needed a song to trigger Krys's confession, so I turned on the stereo. "Faithfully" happened to be playing, so in it went! That it was about a singer pledging faithfulness to his love paralleled with how David would later pledge his love to Krys was an added bonus. :) :)

Tara. Tori. You captured the essence of my story with your songs. I loved them and they fit so well. Thank you for really reading my story enough to be able to do what you do. Thanks!
